Perhaps what I should have said is that the base of the cup should be wider than the spool. This way, the cup really just discourages the thread spool from tipping over. Sort of like a weeble. It's not actually touching the thread causing resistance.

The main reason I offered options is because some people are adamant about not buying more things / or thread stands in general. I have no idea why though, I typically will buy or make anything that makes my life easier or the end product better. It's just a bonus if I get both out of it.
