I think the important thing is to keep the same value (light-dark) set of colors. If you find your favorite color in the paint store and look to the right and left in the same row, most colors should go well together. If you want to make one room pop, choose something from the opposite side of the color wheel from the last one--green/red, blue/orange, yellow/purple.
