To my mind it is primarily the fabrics that determine whether it looks masculine or not.
The one I'm currently working on for my oldest DS is the 7th Mystery Train Ride from the Blocks of the Month or Week here on the quilting board.
I'm using flannel in dark green, rust, dark brown, navy plaid and tan.
