I don't use a walking foot for binding and I don't hand sew anything. I use my regular foot to sew the binding to the back of the quilt, press the binding up then over the front with the edge just at the seam line, then use my zipper foot to sew the binding to the front. The seam will be in the ditch on the back and not show. I made a 36" square wall hanging a few weeks ago and the binding took less than an hour start to finish.
