Karen, i used white felt..i think it comes 60 wide at Joanns. i also hung mine from cheap curtain rods..and the curtain holders that clip on the fabic..pinch the fabric, is a more accurate description. that was when i used the basement as a sewing room, but i don't have the wall space now.
some have used foam board..my friend put one up on the back of her door in the sewing room.. narrow, but worked for her..she just wanted to audition fabric/blocks with borders ideas..etc..
