Can you drop the feed dogs on your machine? If not, then I'd suggest you cover them with tape. This will help your fabric move better. Set your stitch length to '0' and you'll need a special embroidery/darning foot. You may also have to adjust your tension several times.
Once you've done this, then it's a matter of practice, practice, practice I'm afraid.
When I first started to FMQ, the teacher told me 'the faster the better', referring to foot pedal pressure and it seemed to work for me. (I've since learned to slow down and develop a bit more control, lol). There's lots of YouTube videos to help you too.
