You can usually look up the throat specs on the manufacturer's websites.
However, there is some discrepancies as to how/where it is measured. (eg. if the post comes down to the base on a curve, where do they do the measurement from .. the widest spot? or the narrowest?

I seldom have seen height clearance measurements.
And likewise as to how measurements would be made.
I agree with you ... it's not all about the width, as the height can give you more space to stuff the quilt thru. Also, to see what you are doing.
So for a true apples-to-apples comparison you would be best to do it yourself and truly know all the measurements are taken from the same perspective.
