I would wash in cold water and use vinegar to set the colors. Hot water will make colors run period!
Hot water and mild detergent uused for gentle washing will not harm good quality cotton fabrics that have stable dyes.
I wash my fabrics ahead of time with the thought that the next owner would be a person that would not baby the quilt.
