Since I couldn't think of that, I ended up with a butcherblock island top - 1 1/2" thick walnut. It's gorgeous but does require a serious saw to cut out the sewing machine hole. And I will say that it doesn't rock or sway like my Ikea table does. You might want to consider that factor when you choose the table.

Well, I would never use a saw, I would use a router with a template cut to the size of my opening. Woodworking is one of my other passions. tim in san jose
