Like several here have said, I have also abandoned my 1/4" feet on all my machines. Instead, I use the open toe or the "J" foot that comes with my machine, and move the needle. I have far greater control of my "1/4" seam. If I'm using a scant 1/4" or true 1/4", I move the needle position to where I have measured, still using the edge of my foot as the guide.
I find this technique allows for greater consistency with the feed dogs able to do their job, and the fabric glides effortlessly, creating more accuracy and straighter sewing lines.
