I fold mine so that it fits in what ever container I want to store itin. I set the container on end and fold it so it will fit across the end. I am using clear containers right now and sort by color. I need to move the shelves the fabric was on, and I have to refold to fit the space.
I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but this is one of those "It depends" kind of questions.
