Renee, please go to this you tube video and watch it a couple or three times. I think the whole process will make better sense to you then. The lady who made this video has a wonderful website that is worthwhile visiting.
That is a good tutorial. I've never done any English paper piecing but watched someone doing it a little while ago. Look easy.
