I've done the opposite. I iron freezer paper on the back of the fabric. Then,I trace the child's design onto the fabric with a thin black fabric pen. Have the child color in the design with Crayolas. Peel the freezer paper off. Layer the fabric beyween a good sandwich of plain white paper towels and heat set until no crayon is transferred to the paper towels. The freezer paper helps stabilize the fabric to keep it from shifting while coloring. Remember if you do the iron on approach, your design will be reversed. I've used the white fabric from WalMart. I think it's called Roclon.
