My first impression was as you think; however, it is really not what I consider a waste of fabric. Yes, you do have a very small amount of waste but if you follow AccuQuilt's instructions you may loose 1/2" on each side of the die but that waste is offset by "accurate cuts" and to me it is well worth a little waste.
A bonus surprise is that I can cut my previous project scraps into useable blocks or segments of a block and in the past these scraps were once what I considered throw-away scraps so no waste here!
