It will be easier to check the needle and hook relationship with the throat plate off.

When that line is just about to disappear completely, the eye of the needle should be about the position you see in the first photo - possibly a touch higher but not much. When the eye is there, the tip of the hook should be right behind the eye as in the second photo.
