I actually have two. One with the little black guide and one without (same foot just got the machine mechanic to take off the guide). I have found that lately, I use the one without the guide more. I think I was also pushing the fabric against the guide sometimes. And of course, you cannot use the one with the guide if you are sewing HST's.
