After my father-in-law passed away, I wanted to use his shirts in a quilt for my husband. I didn't have enough to make an entire quilt, so I decided to combine them with other fabrics. Most of the shirts read as "light" at a distance, so I decided to play on that. I tea-dyed the shirts with white background. I bought some civil war reproduction fabrics in the dark, rich colors that my DH likes and made a log cabin top with a backing of 10" squares. It is my favorite quilt. I think it's because the shirting fabrics make lively lights.

I learned from this and started to collect shirts from the Goodwill monthly sales. I try to remember that I need to buy lots of stripes and plaids that read "light".
