I made one of these, too, also inspired by Tartan. I realized when arranging the crayons that if alternated, the seams of the pieces making up the crayons that don't match up -- as in lined up -- are not so obvious. Also, it's the way children often put their crayons back in the box. I'm pretty OCD but the alternating crayons worked for me!
