No Christy you can use it with any low shank Singer back to VS models (1880s).
It's a manual adjustment model, as opposed to the template version.
They have the advantage of being able to set any size and gap, disadvantages are it takes longer to set up and they can't do a key hole.
Just buy one of each (I did)

I have one of each! (possibly more) But they are in "the hoard" and I haven't tinkered with them yet. I've been quilting, not shirt making, so no need for buttonholes. I just was wondering if that older style was specific to certain machines.
