Once you get the hang of it, free motion quilting can be very relaxing and rewarding. It's just one of those things that the more you do it the better you get at it. Hang in there. I do all size quilts on my domestic Janome. I do have a larger (9" vs 6") harp area and that makes a big difference on doing large quilts. The part I don't care for is getting a big one basted and ready to be FMQ but am finding tricks to getting that done also.
