I don't know how hog-ring pliers work but the belt pliers have three functions:
1. Cut the leather (you can see the blade on the back where it would cut the belt as it lays in the center grove)
2. Put a hole in the newly cut end of the belt for the staple (hole punch on the innermost grove)
3. Close the staple through the hole once the belt is fitted on the treadle.
I think they're pretty cool and am looking forward to using them.
