So here's a mock up picture - in the real world the 2 pieces would be sewn together, then place your square up ruler 1/4" from the curved edges:

Then trim both sides - the pink sides. When you sew your blocks together, you are in theory sewing on the curved edge at the outer most edge of the block. The other layout I did first when I found about this 'method' was this wall hanging:
