I took a Craftsy class, and the instructor (can't remember her name) would say ESS--every stinkin' seam! Meaning SITD on every seam in your quilt before doing any other quilting! I usually only do around the basic block but it sure helps in stabilizing the quilt for FMQ.
I took the same class, and, like you, I now do some SITD around basic blocks. I really like the way my quilts turn out.
