We are all "wired" differently for sure.... I do love looking for ideas on the internet but as a fairly new quilter, I still am pattern driven but find great joy in picking fabrics.
I also enjoy taking a class now and then and join in on "open sewing" evenings at my LQS. Networking with other quilters can often get your creative juices flowing.
