I am in the process of making a variation of log cabin quilt using 1-1/2" strips. No problems at all. It is called Heartstrings, Log Cabin Fever book by Evelyn Sloppy.
I have used 1" strips for sashing and had no problems, just cut strips as you would any other size strips.
Nothing to it.
