As with quillows, machine stitch to the quilt AFTER it's quilted. You shouldn't have a problem with that at that point. If you don't like the way it looks, take out the machine stitching and re-stitch by hand (don't recommend, you need the machine stitch strength to hold things together...). Have fun!
