When the foot gets close to the pin, I pull it half out so the tip is still in but within the seam and not where the needle will hit, as the needle passes the pin tip, I pull it the rest of the way out. I slow down a little but not much because by now I have developed a sort of rhythm to it. I do use the long flathead pins, so I have something solid to hold and enough length to keep my fingers safe.
