I always buy either a bone in shank or butt. I boil them for a couple hrs. to get rid of a lot of the salt, slice and serve. If I want a glaze put it in the oven for a short time with the glaze on. I get so many compliments and everyone that asks how I do my ham can't believe it.
My Mom taught me to do it this way.
