I think she has already quilted the block. Looks to me like there is batting at the edge.
I was trying the 'quilt as you go method' on a practice square. Once the square was finished, I thought I might as well try 'stitch in the ditch'. Neither were successful, but today my practice pieces are looking a tad better.
I think you're wrong! I think your first attempt was very successful!! Many of us probably think back to our first attempts and cringe - but we've all got to start somewhere. And, frankly, that block you posted looks pretty darn good to me!

My grandmother recently gave me a precious family quilt - my great grandmother and great-great aunt pieced it, and my grandmother was allowed to add a few stitches when they quilted the top. She was 8 or 9, she says. I was reminded that once upon a time girls learned to sew very early - many boys, too. So some of us these days are a little bit behind when it comes to the basics. We shouldn't beat ourselves up for it! Quite the opposite, I'd say. It takes some bravery to start learning a new skill.
