That is what I do. I usually cut the fabric strips 1.125 inches for a folded border and then trim it done to 1/2" after pressing it in half like binding. But I had problem with this table runner because I didn't want to put the folded edge on the quilt itself. You don't have to miter, you just fold back the ends in the shape of a miter and cut the end off.
