Ken,

The knob unscrews from the shaft. What I'd do before taking it apart is to remove the winder from the machine and soak it in a solvent. Turn it, push it in and out and make sure there is no gummed up oil causing the shaft to stick. I've only had one apart and off hand I can't tell you what kind of spring is in it.

These winders can be horribly loaded with gummed up old oil. I've had several of them that were so bad I had to soak them Hoppe's #9 gun solvent to clean them.
