Lately, if I think I like a pattern, I print it in black and white with the contrast turned way down so it is just gray scale colored, then I can get out the colored pencils and felt pens and try different color ideas. Works for me. If I want to play with the colors more, I just photocopy my grayscale print so I can have extras in case I hate my first idea.
