Look up Bonnie Hunter and her site. She explains how she marks her machines. She likes vintage machines and has quite a collection. It's how she marks each machine so she can sew on any of them and still have a 1/4" seam. Hope this helps.
I agree, Bonnie Hunter sews on a multitude of different machines and posted about setting up for a seam without having to remove anything when opening the slide plate to change bobbins. quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/08/sewing-saturday.html
