I didn't put anything but the same tap water I've always used into my Rowenta, and one day it just sputtered and starting spotting in brown rust. I only use it as a dry iron now and spray from a bottle. It's not unusual for irons in general and Rowenta in particular to develop these problems -- unfortunately!
