I'm doing embroidery on applique flower shapes. We hold down with a zigzag of invisible thread around the edges, then embroidery on top. The centres go through one layer, the outlines go through batting and a muslin sandwich.the later embroidery is refered to as quilting.ie chain quilting which is done just off the edge through all layers if you can. my avatar is reverse hand turned applique which I put a fancy stitch from my machine all around the edges as I disliked the stark nature of the edge just hand turned.
