My machine appears to be not at all picky as to what thread I use, which is convenient! (Though I haven't tried metallics in it yet)
If I want my stitches to really show up, I use Connecting Threads. Their thread is thicker so it shows up well, and it's so inexpensive that I have (literally) bought a spool in every color they offer so I have lots of options.
If I want my stitches to hide or blend in more, I use Presencia or Aurifil, whichever I have the closest color in. Those are thinner threads so they "vanish" more.
