Sounds like your Merritt uses a swing needle arrangement. Singer used a swing needle on their 206, 306 and 319 machines too.
I'm currently working on a White branded zigzag machine. It's left homing but the entire needle bar moves from side to side when it's zigzagging. I think it just depends on what kind of mechanism the engineers came up with.
