Yeah, my Two Spools does that too. It's one of the reasons my Davis NVF is my favorite machine as I prefer to make my own decisions. It is thoughtful when features like that are there, but for me, it's frustrating when technology thinks it's smarter than me because it never is.
If it's annoying to you too, you could probably remove the tension release from the presser foot bar and put a different one somewhere else on the thread path. It'd be quite a bit of tinkering though.
