Welcome from Ohio. When I learned to quilt it was hand piecing and quilting. We used The Sampler Quilt by Diana Leone. There are several classic block patterns in the book and instructions for getting started i.e. measurements for sizes, instructions for all the things you need to know to start out. That Patchwork Place series should have some hand piecing/quilting books they have been around a very long time. You might find some at your library, search catalog for hand piecing. If you have some quilt shops in the area check and see if the offer any hand piecing classes. And if there is a quilt guild in your area check in with them, there may be a group there that could help you learn.
Good luck and hope to see you posting on here too.
