I'm not really sure how you could keep the ruler AND fabric sandwich firmly against the foot. Even with a long arm, you have to be very careful not to get the ruler caught under the foot. You can not only damage the foot, you can throw the timing off.
The rulers I'm thinking about getting are called Fine Line Quilting Rulers- they have a gripper strip (which is the hook part of a Velcro strip along the center of the ruler, on the underside). It is supposed to make controlling the ruler and fabric sandwich easy. I've never used a ruler - so I'm not sure if this is all too optimistic. I certainly don't want to throw off the timing of my machine since I don't have a back up and would have to ship my machine out of the country for repair.
