This weekend I had a similar situation. I made a mini quilt that I color coordinated to a dark batik. I hated the way the batik looked, but I had committed myself to not purchasing any fabrics for this project. Suddenly I added a bright blue binding and it pulled out all of the light colors in the batik instead of the darks. Maybe instead of the blackish border you can add something bright like the blue in the bottom center. Great job, by the way. I love the quilt!
