After my irons are totally cool I just use a Magic Eraser dipped in hot water and squeezed out. No abrasion whatsoever. You can also while it's still warm run it across a piece of not so soft cloth like cheap muslin or terry that hasn't been treated with dryer softener.

Just wish I'd have thought about using a pressing sheet from the get-go. I got the sticky stuff off, but there is a ghosted outline of webbing imprinted on my iron. Gosh! I just ruin all my good stuff!
