My husband, a math PhD, calls it the Golden Mean. It is the relationship of the length to the width. Think of a 3x5 card, pictures that are 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 etc. We made charity quilts a few years back, and one lady brought one in that was much too long for its width. It looked really strange.
So I guess I would say the Golden Mean is a pleasing-to-the-eye relationship of the length and width.
