The ones that are rough - stripped screws and the thing is rickety, "mid-century" and had the stuffing beat out of it, parts missing and not reasonable to try to find replacements (again, generally a mid-century /particle board thing, never a treadle or "worth fixing" style of desk with real wood that can be repaired) - do sometimes hit the dump. Sometimes a neighbor takes them and spends more time with them than I'm willing to.
I've gotten some of my best cabinets from freecycle. Some of my worst came with machines I've bought. Locally, cabinets alone on CL are usually overpriced, often have been "upcycled" with an ugly paint job. I've only had to scrap one cabinet so far. I took the hardware to fix a better cabinet.
