I have 2 old irons each with handles that I use to weight the ruler. Then I press on the ruler with one hand between the irons, while using the rotary cutter with the other. This really stabilizes my ruler which has the clear plastic gripe material on the back. You don't have to press hard to keep the ruler stable. The weight of the irons does that for you. You can find these old irons in antique shops.
