In regards to the slidelock, I think that if you are using the June Taylor ruler you would put the slidelock on top of the ruler. If you are using a reg ruler then you measure over from the rights side of fabric then butt the slide lock up against the ruler push down on the slide lock with left hand, remove the reg ruler then cut along the slide lock. I bought mine in Paducah this year and this is how the lady from slidelock demonstrated it. It works like a charm.
