It has been so much fun learning to use the ruler foot. I have a Janome MC 6500 and I ordered a set to fit my machine from Janome. The rulers/templates are where you can get a little creative. I shopped around for 1/8" acrylic shapes (my machine is low-shank) on ebay, Etsy, Google, etc., and found some interesting shapes. Ruler Foot Quilting is just like anything else in that the more you practice, the better you get and your comfort level increases with time. I have even used a butterfly template which the Hallmark shop had attached to a greeting card. Start looking outside the box. If it's acrylic and the proper height (1/8th" for low-shank, 1/4th" for high-shank), then give it a try. Of course, the best templates are the ones made by Westalee. But, sometimes you just want a basic shape. Have fun!
