Mineral spirits is safe around japanned finishes but leaves an oily residue. I haven't had any trouble with paint sticking because of it though.
Acetone might be ok. I haven't tested it.
Alcohol and lacquer thinner will both dissolve shellac.
I'm not sure about Naptha, I've never used it.
