Don't be afraid, just jump right in. You can learn as you go and enjoy each moment. My "new" machine is three months old (Brother Dream Weaver VM6200D) and I am having a ball learning all the cool things it does. I took my hubby with me when I was looking and he was so impressed by the machine that he told me to go for it! (I am blessed!) Enjoy!!!!
