I agree. If I get a good deal, I will even buy kits on sale, just because I love the fabric, not necessarily the pattern. Great way to beef up your stash. I frequent Connecting Threads sale kits all the time for that reason and have gotten marvelous deals with yardage at less than $3-4 per yard. Their kits always include extras for cutting mistakes or whatever, and have a actually gotten almost a second baby quilt out of scraps from the first.
